Department of Biochemistry
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Balıkesir University was established in 2008 in accordance with Article 30 (Additional) of Law No. 2809, as published in the Official Gazette dated October 18, 2008 (Issue No. 27028), and commenced its educational activities in 2011. The Department of Biochemistry, as an integral part of the faculty, plays a pivotal role in veterinary medical education by serving as a bridge between basic sciences and clinical applications through the molecular investigation of biological structures and processes.
The Department of Biochemistry offers both theoretical and practical instruction in Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry I and II, Clinical Biochemistry, and laboratory practices within the scope of internship training, as part of the Veterinary Medicine Undergraduate Program. These courses aim to equip students with the ability to comprehend biological events at the molecular level, interpret fundamental biochemical analyses, and understand the principles of homeostatic regulation in living systems.
The department's main research areas include the biochemical analysis of hormones, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and metabolites; investigation of the metabolic effects of dietary supplements in experimental animal models; redox balance and oxidative stress; identification of biochemical biomarkers; and the elucidation of molecular biochemical mechanisms. In conducting these studies, the department utilizes advanced laboratory infrastructure, including autoanalyzers and ELISA systems.
The mission of the department is to educate scientifically competent, ethically responsible, inquisitive, and self-improving professionals who are capable of contributing to science at a universal level. Its vision is to foster the development of innovative, critically thinking, and socially responsible veterinarians by effectively conveying scientific advancements to students. Additionally, the department adheres to core quality principles that include continuous improvement of educational activities, ensuring an inclusive and transparent approach to student engagement, promoting collaboration among academic and administrative staff, maintaining high standards in academic performance, and encouraging multidisciplinary collaborations to enhance international visibility.
With its qualified academic staff, well-equipped laboratories, and strong commitment to research, the Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Balıkesir University, aims to make substantial contributions not only at the national level but also in the international scientific community.
